I had a 6 strand D97 string rip the shoulders off a pin nock so I guess I should be adding a bit of padding
. I knew better but got away with it until now. When you add the padding to the loops do you just do the actual loop or do you do the loop and the twisted part. Seems to me that just the loop would be enough but there may be someting i haven't thought of. There usually is

You want the 'padding' to taper out to nothing gradually. Cut pairs of extra string and taper their lengths. Once twisted in you have a lovely taper .

DC, I make em without jig. just put another 4 short extra pieces of string before starting to twist. then twist it as if you did a 10strand string
