What is an "arrow pass"?

I was cruising through some old posts and found the pictured bow by "adb" which has an inlayed "arrow pass". Can someone please explain what this is and how it is used?

It's just a locator for arrow placement and usually wear resistance although that shouldn't really be needed with proper arrow spine.

Thanks Pat - so its basically just a reference point so you are placing the arrow at the same point each time? Thats what I was thinking, but was wondering if there was more to it.
