185 gramms of yew
« on: May 17, 2020, 10:07:06 am »
Hey, my little doughter had ordered a "yew with horn and curves" for her 5th birthday on May 6th. OK, we took a little walk on April 21 and came back with a little branch. It was about 1 1/4 in diameter and I counted more than 50 rings  (-S On the lower side of the branch you could clearly see a darker coloration in the sap  - the compression wood. I have never seen that in the sap before. I quickly shaved it and put it on a form for drying. On May 4th and 5th I did the bow. Its probably the most impressive wood I have touched up to now... I mistretead and tortured it with everything I had, steam dry heat, clamps....it just takes everything without complaining...

Simk, don't know if it's available where you live but I've used 1/4" ramin wood dowels with 60gr. field points for kids arrows. Once they're straightened and sealed they fly great from bows 25#s or less. I was actually surprised how well they fly from the 22#@23" osage selfbow I built for my girlfriend. They average 220 - 250 gr finished at 24".

Lovely bow! I like how you made that girly look with the handle wrap and "mascherl"
Good work.
Greets to the family!

Marc, Martin & Pappy => Thanks, glad you like it  :BB

PaSteve: Thanks for your suggestions - the dowels are a good idea...but I was thinking about just barreling 5/16 hemlock shafts to 9/32. I do also have some 30gn aluminium points. Sadly they are 5/16 in diameter. I would really love to find some 9/32 or 1/4 points.... What diameter are the field points you are talking about? 1/4" ?Any ideas on where to find? Brands? Anybody?

Carol Archery in the UK used to supply all parts for 1/4 or 9/32 arrows - piles, shafts, nocks and even rubber blunts. Her website (google is your friend) is still listing them, so maybe send her an email?
