Max draw weight for snaky bow?
« on: April 20, 2020, 09:50:09 pm »
Ive got this great snaky stave that is snaky all the way down, no knots, no twist, no problems.  Thin rings.  My draw length is 29" and I am trying to figure out what the maximum draw weight would be on a snaky stave like this.  I've dealt with snaky staves before, but I've always been on the side of caution and aimed for no greater than 60#.  I am wanting to get around 85-90#, but I am curious to see if any of you have achieved a higher draw weight on a snaky stave.

Thanks

In general it is hard to get heavy weight out of a snaky stave, if it is really snaky with pretty big hook, just some snake in it should be ok, but really snaky ones tend to try and hinge in the hooks. Picture would help, not sure how snaky you are talking about. Like this on it is tough, not saying it can't be done , but tough.

Nice bow Pappy; if nothing else a snake makes an interesting walking stick :)

That pic looks very similar to my stave Pappy.  What do you think? Would 70# be out of the question?  What kind of draw weights have you guys achieved with snaky staves, both severe and mild curves?

I'm wondering why you can't make a heavy snaky bow. I've always thought that bending a snaky bow was twisting a lot of it rather than bending it if you follow me. Do you think that would make it fail?

I’m thinking it’s possible. They tend to be a bit tricker to tiller and I usually end up chasing a few problem areas longer than I like therefore coming in a little lighter than I want sometimes. Maybe you can give it a try and let us know. :BB
