I wanted to show off a bow I finished up recently. This one is a little different than my normal builds. This bow started out as an experimental bow blank that I glued up in October of 2018. The bow blank had some issues and I shelved it for a later date. I recently saw the blank sitting in the corner and decided to fix its issues and finish it out.
The bow is a 65" ntn maple/maple/black locust tri-lam drawing 50# / 28". The limbs are 1-5/8" wide at the fades with a midlimb taper to 1/2" nocks. The bow was glued up with 1-1/4" of gentle reflex towards the tips of the bow. After finishing the bow holds a flat profile and takes 1/4" of set after a hard workout. The bow has a 1/8" positive tiller.
The bow has a white oak power lam and laminated black cherry riser. The tip overlays are osage that have been dyed black to look like horn. The grip is dyed jute twine with a beavertail leather arrow plate. The maple backing was dyed brown with leather dye. I had some glue spots on the backing that would not let the dye penetrate which gave it a bit of a splotchy look that I don't like. If I could do it over I would definitely put a snake skin on this bow. The string is a padded loop 12 strand X99 string with beaver fur silencers. The finish is 8 coats of water based semi-gloss spar.
This bow is only one of a few flat bows I have built, of which I have been most impressed with this one so far. It is a very nice shooter that is clean and crisp on release with very little shock. The bow shoots 10 grains per pound at a consistent 155-156 fps. Its not as fast as the R/D bows I build, but I sure like how it shoots. I will be building a modified bow of this design as a potential candidate for the bow swap.
I had a gentleman in Texas who showed some interest in this bow, so I offered to send it to him to use. Hopefully he will enjoy it and shoot a few critters with it along the way.
