ERC tension/compression

Everyone says cedar is low in tension and breaks easier and I've heard a lot of people say to "trap the back" in hickory because of its tension strength. So my question is, is it possible to "trap the belly" in cedar to give it more tension relief?

We make the bellies round with a "D" cross section rather than trapping a belly of low compression.

It's not that ERC is weak in tension, I think ERC sapwood has pretty good tension strength. It is that ERC can't take any imperfections on the back like knots, pins or gouges and tillering should be spot on. One of the best shooting ERC bow I've seen or shot was all sapwood and ELB style.

That's good to know, I'm trying to head off mistakes before I even start but I know that's impossible. Def will have to save my ERC for later
