Bobcat in my trap
« on: March 02, 2020, 04:24:38 pm »
Got this pretty kitty this morning! Pretty happy with this one. We were walking the dogs a couple weeks ago up in the mountains and I noticed fresh cat tracks on top of the crust of snow. Like just in the right sunlight they could be made out, super faint and I almost didn’t see them. So I brought a cage up and have been hiking back up there to check it and was gonna pull the trap today because there’s been nothing but it looks like it was my lucky day. Beautiful cat and should get some gas money for this one. Fingers crossed gun money haha

Looks like a nice sized cat!  Skin and tan carefully!  Should be a great pelt!

Very nice catch. Only cats I catch here are barn or feral. They sure seem to like box traps.

I let it soak in salt water for 36 hours, cubed up the meat and coated it in flour and seasonings. Fried it in a pan and as it was cooking I started getting a smell I’d put similar to the smell of bobcat urine. Started getting a little worried. Cooked em a little too long and once out of the oil that smell went away. We cautiously ate a couple nuggets and on my girlfriends 4/5th nugget she suddenly was running for the trash. Hahaha it was funny but it confirmed my thoughts. When I killed the cat it had peed on its fur. When I skinned it I was trying to find an ear and held the pelt back up and I musta rubbed that pee soaked fur all over the backstrap and hindquarter. I thought I didn’t but by that smell I definitely did. I rinsed it off and changed the water out while soaking but some of those chunks were NASTY! So. Needless to say, untainted bobcat isn’t as good as cougar but better than coyote and tainted bobcat my dog even nosed around in his bowl.

Well, kudos for trying, Tracker.   ;D  On one of the first deer I ever killed, I grabbed it by the tarsal glands when I was dragging it, got the stink all over my hands, and cut out the backstraps and tenderloins before I realized my mistake.   The meat was...strong.   :o

Moral #1 - drag deer by front legs or antlers!  Moral #2:  don't taint meat with musk, scat or urine! (lol)
Funny stories - never happened to any of the rest of us >:D (lol)

Great story and I’m sure one you won’t forget. I’m liking your girlfriend and I’ve never meet her. Seems like a keeper.
I’m so happy my wife likes wild game and helps me put it up. Not sure I could get her to try bobcat though.
