Forged draw knife and New fighter
« on: March 10, 2020, 11:53:42 am »
Made a couple of these the other day, thought you guys might enjoy pictures.

Draw knife is a bowyers style, straight blade. This one is in 1084 blade steel left in forged finish with a convex edge. Laminated paduak handles. I took the shape of one of my knife handles and modified it here. Should be easier on the hands with work and I always leave enough wood present for someone to modify them to their hands is so desired.

Fighter is a broom handle 52100 drop point. This one is a lightweight fighter that has a nice distal taper. Forged 52100 from round bar stock. Differential heat treating and a dark etch and should wear nicely. Scales are redwood burl finished with about 7 coats of Tru Oil. Sheath for this one is on the bench and I am up in the air about it's style.
Enjoy!

Thanks!  I forgot to mention that I ground the spine of this drawknife on a 8 degree angle to use it as a scraper if you wanted.

Thanks, I have a couple more of these on the bench right now. A shorter 5" version and a 8" curved draw knife. I'll make the handles on them with some heavily figured Bastogne walnut I think.

better picture of the draw knife. It really helps to have someone who can do professional pictures.

Your work looks great. I’m looking forward to getting the 5” drawknife. I’ve been looking for one for quite awhile. Even better that it will be a custom.

Thanks!  That's the fun of forging, anything is possible. Big, small...curved, straight... whatever you need.
