I always remove the bark(except Yew, it usually pops off) and put two coats of shellac on the back and ends. I live in a humid, coastal environment so keep that in mind.

A couple of layers of shellac or a layer of wood glue should do. Shellac is easier to remove later.

I'll drink two, I mean to, lagers! And ales!  Glue however, as you mentioned, is in layers!  Spell check gets all of us now and then!

Looks like you might be able to get a good split right down the middle by strateing a diagonal cut across the center and drinking, I mean, driving some wedges.  Have the lagers handy for the drinking!
Btw, with part of the Netherlands are you in?

Since it is dutch hawthorn you should debark it immediately to check if there are no worms in there. Of all the hawthorn I cut 90 precent of the logs where full of wormholes.

If there are no worms, split it and apply one layer of cheap water dissolvable wood glue. This will wash off easy when the wood is dry

i just figured out I don't really know much about The Netherlands geography!  My maternal grandfather's family is from around Veirduine(?) (High Dune(?)) in the northwest(?).  Have to find the family tree book to get the more correct spellings!
