First Run With the New Forge

Kevin, you're right, it is addictive. I didn't realize how long I played with the forge today until I quit and looked at the clock. just played with some simple stuff to get used to how hot to use it.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

I like it Eddie. You'll be buying up old farm steel all over FL now.

Aww, shucks. Thanks, everybody. Kevin the blacksmith gave me a quick lesson on forge welding when I picked up the forge. He made me do all of the hammering, showed me using Borax for flux. I brought it home and finished welding it up. I'm still not through drawing the blade out. He also walked me through making a set of tongs out of rebar.

TSA, What he showed me was pretty simple. Once the two ends was folded over real close, just so you could see light between the gap, I filled the space with Borax. Then put it back in the forge till it was good and hot. Then started beating it from the middle , out towards the edge. Anyplace you could see light between the two pieces was filled with Borax, reheated and the process started over again until there was no light between the two pieces. Once it was welded then I reheated it and started to draw the blade out.
