D97 string info needed
« on: December 21, 2019, 01:50:03 am »
Thinking of trying D97 for future strings. Questions- how thick is each strand? How many strands for 50# bow? What serving size for nocks? Do you also serve the string loops?
Thanks

I have used D 97 on a lot of bows I have used any where between 8-16 strand the 16 being for a 62lb highly reflexed bow probably over kill but the bow scared me to string,I normally use 10 strand for 50 lb hunting bow but I also use FF plus that is just as good and cheaper in my opinion I'm not sure of the string thickness of either , but knocks need to be butter smooth when using any FF strings as they can Frey at the loops I usauly pad my loops with D 50 but others have used artificial sinew with good luck !

I have used DF-97 for many years, a bow string needs to be 6 times as strong as the bow's draw weight to be safe. DF-97 has a 125# breaking strength per thread so technically you could make a very skinny string from it if you choose to.

I used to pad my loops with 4 more strands of B-50 but decided after using it for years it wasn't necessary on a selfbow, a glass bow may need the padding but I don't know. I do put nock overlays on every bow I build which reinforces the tips.

I use 12 strands on every bow I make regardless of poundage, not to be extra safe but to have a perfect nock fit with my bohning classic nocks and .023 zebra serving.

I have shot 8 strand bow strings made from DF-97 to try to gain a little speed but something just wasn't right compared to what I was used to so I went back to my 12 strand strings.

for my own bows i use D97 typically 12 strand unless i'm making a tiller string.
sorry i'm not more help i just make stuff by what feels right, i can tell you that it is a little bit thinner than B50 but doesn't stretch hardly at all.

Good stuff. I use 10 strands for bows up to 55lbs.I use a double serving of B55, and dental floss between the 2 servings for wider nocks.Keep it waxed, and it will wear like iron.I do have string over lays on all the bows that I put it on. Micarta for glass bows, and bone for self bow, and backed bows.

Same as Eric. I always do 12 strands of d97. It's overkill from a strength perspective but it's the right size for arrow nocks.
