Horse Hair Faux Horn
« on: November 12, 2019, 08:38:58 am »
I don't ever really post here, mostly just read, but I was surprised that no one has posted about tnis. Since I don't know the rules on links I won't post one but if you Google "horsehair rhino horn" one of the articles should come up.
Apparently scientists are binding horse hair in a proprietary glue made from silk and drying it under pressure. It is supposed to mimic the look as well as properties of rhino horn(the scientists intend to flood the horn market with counterfeit horn). It seems to me that the same process could be used to create a pre-shaped 'horn' belly. Any thoughts?

I love the idea of counterfeit rhino horn to flood the market devaluating the the horn to help save the endangered rhino but I would think the process would be too complicated for most ordinary folks for it to be practical. Horn for horn bows is readily available although relatively expensive here in the US, mostly due to shipping from Asia.

I may be wrong but I think I've heard rhino horn described as "solidified hair". I don't think "normal" horn is quite the same stuff. It is still keratin though.

Here's a quote from the site
"The horn of the rhinoceros is not a horn in the traditional sense like the horn of a cow or the nail of a hoof, though it does share some material properties. The rhino’s horn is actually a tuft of hair that grows, tightly packed and glued together by exudates from sebaceous glands, on the nose of the animal."

That is what I was going to say :)  Why do you think there are no bows with rhino horn bellies?
Flooding markets to stop them...….lunacy.

Why do you say that? I thought it sounded like a decent idea. Although the bad guys are probably already making it.
I really liked the "spiking it with Viagra" statement. Way to perpetuate a myth. ;D

I like to the logic too.
Think about it like this are you really going to go out and shoot a large dangerous animal that the authorities don’t like you shooting if you’re only going to get $50 for it?

Though I kinda want the faux horn to make and handles and other parts out of.

The problem is, you will re-create a demand for the product and there will be folks who want the ego boost of owning the "real" thing and not a knock off.

Good point but if it is indistinguishable from the real thing wouldn't that sort itself out after a bit. Especially if they put Viagra in all of it. ;D ;D ;D

Then use bully puzzle sticks for sinew, and Viagra horn for the belly... it would really shoot a full ..... You know what, I'm not getting in trouble again over this type of joke, but you can see all the fun innuendo to be had.
