BLACK LOCUST LONGCURVE.

Here's a Black locust recurve I just finished up. Its 66" ntn 1 3/4" wide at the fades and straight tapers to 3/8" nocks. It was a bit of a character stave, not side to side, but front to back. It had three large bumps to deal with the center one I took advantage of and made a cool reverse style handle. The other two I tried to remove the best I could with heat. The one in the lower limb is now almost unnoticeble, the one in the top limb is more pronouced. It is backed with western diamond back rattle snake skins, and has a deer leather grip and deer antler tips. It pulls around 50#@28" I havent reweighed it since finshing it but its pretty close to 50#. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and I realy like the way it shoots. Hope you enjoy!

Very nice static tip recurve.  Love the sexy handle.

How did you like the black locust?  Compare favorably to osage for you?

Tailor made for that handle.  Do you think a guy could glue on a piece on the back of a normal stave and get that deep of a grip?

Did the BL take more set than osage?  Just wondering what aspect was less forgiving.  The stuff I've used in backed bows is slightly lower density than osage, but it worked about the same otherwise.

Lennie, I've just had problems with it in the past. If you over stress it to much in any one little spot durring tillering it will fret on the belly. This piece held reflex great, maybe not quite as much as osage would but close. Oh, and yes I think you probally could glue a riser on the back of a bow as long as it doesnt bend passed the fades at all. I've done simalar handles by leaving extra rings of sapwood on the back of the handle area.
