That's a great question...its hard to measure,..trial and error helps,..and preference vary.,..just a suggestion..a lot depends on the size of bow,,,,try starting with 1000 grains...use less or more on your next bow based on results..

It depends on so many factors! How much surface area do you want to cover? How thick do you want the sinew layer to be? I have backed short bows with thin layers of sinew and used less than 1 ounce. I have also backed longer bows with thicker layers and used 2 or even 3 ounces, though that is extreme and I am not sure the weight added by the sinew actually helped cast any.

Are you trying to get a sense how much sinew you need because you need to get some, and want to make sure you get enough?

sort of depends on what you are trying to accomplish with the sinew  :)

I add as little sinew as I can to do the job, usually 1 layer plus another layer just in the center. If your wood is good you can just line the center with sinew and it will give you a very similar performance as adding more but with less weight.

In the bow making video about Ed Scott he states that 4oz is about the average per bow he uses.

i usually do a single layer then come back and add another layer to smooth out and fill in any gaps... then I let sit for about 3 months or better inside with a weight tied to handle in between to chairs...that is on a cedar bow which tension is not that great and she is a screamer..have no idea how much in ounces that is...gut
