Best method to harvest verdigris from copper?
« on: September 23, 2019, 03:52:05 pm »
Any ideas on harvesting the verdigris from copper neatly and safely?  I am thinking the dust is a bit toxic.  I haven't tried any method yet, but plan to wear a dust mask if I do it with a wire brush or scraper.

I had no first hand experience so i googled
If you search for "verdigris diy instructables" you will find a neat solution
basically you put copper scraps in a closed glass container with acetic acid (or vinegar that has a lower acid concentration)
after a week or so you have your verdigris in solution
You let your liquid evaporate and you have your green powder
Read the article. Many more interesting information there

Is it for a dye or stain?

I’ve done the method glisglis said, and it works very well. I used scraps left over from wiring. It’s a good use for the leftovers.
Just strip it, throw a bunch in the jar and fill with vinegar.once the liquid is dark blue-green you pour it in a flat shallow dish and let it evaporate, scrape the powder into a jar and it’s good to go.

My plan is to copy the Mary Rose type binding that WillS wrote up.  Green is one of my favorite colors!
Sliante!  I have quite a bit of copper scrap on hand.  Since I also have a lot f vinegar, I will start a jar!
