Anyone know what this is?
« on: August 19, 2019, 05:34:43 pm »
Someone brought over a bunch of really old looking primitive style arrows. They also brought this object.
Any ideas?
I've got some guesses but I'd like to hear what others think first.
It's approx two and a half feet long. Has little pins that I believe are metal and placed very evenly spaced and protruding the same amount. Also a few wraps of some type of string. What appears to be a handle on other end. They said they came from same place as the arrows.

First thing that popped into my mind was that it's the cutter for rifling barrels.

Yeah.... it's the correct length too. I'd be inclined to say that's probably it.

Well I wasn't going to say anything but that's what I was thinking to. Or maybe even just for cleaning bore and rifling.
Was kinda hoping someone would say that's what it was, I use to have one just like it.

Doesn't look sturdy enough to be a cutter, that probably is an improvised cleaning rod to remove fouling from the rifling.  Likely for a plains or mountain rifle.  A cutter for rifling very likely would be hard steel. I doubt this one had anything to do with arrows.  That's my wag! :-M >:D

I think it's for cleaning with a patch. With the metal put there to follow the grooves.

Now we're getting somewhere. I think it's for picking your nose. I think it's got a bit of residue left on it.

PS might have to give it a try. My sinuses have been bothering me lately.

What caliber are your sinuses? >:D (lol).  What diameter is the rod?  That may be a clue.  Could be a cleaning brush for a still, too!.  These old tools are very interesting, especially since the technology has been lost or forgotten!

That may be a clue. What is the outside diameter of the pins/cutters?

Cleaning sounds a little better than cutting.

Not by my calipers at the moment. I'll try to get that information when I get done picking my nose.
Was just think you could probably do a frontal lobotomy with this thing. Thinking I might have gotten a little to deep.lol

Seriously though. One of my thoughts was what Eddie said. Pins could  hold patch on and clean groves. I don't notice any staining or residue other than from picking my nose of course.
