Unwilling Yew Branch
« on: July 28, 2019, 06:35:17 pm »
I posted this quite a while ago. It was giving me fits. It would move by itself when you steamed it and then slowly, over days or weeks, move back. I finally cut it in half and spliced it back together but I did it without knowing that it was still moving. When it did stop the string alignment was out again. I was done with trying to get the limbs to move which just left bending the handle. But I'd spliced the handle. It got down to trying to steam the splice or scrapping the bow so I went ahead and steamed and bent the handle. The first time I missed by a bit so I had to do it again. I thougholy expected it to come apart but it didn't. I was a little  puckered the first few pulls on the tree but I've shot it a few hundred times and the splice is holding. So West Systems 105/205 will take steam, at least it did with this one.
So It's a Yew branch(thanks Sabo) 64"NTN 40#@27", Bighorn Sheep tips(thanks Goat) and old couch leather for the grip. It has had more dry heat and steam corrections than I care to think about so here's some pictures. I don't know if the string is going to stay in alignment this time but it hasn't moved for a week so here's hoping.

DAYUM SON! I know you are a better Bowyer than I am!!! Dagum that's crazy! What the world made you look at that and say, " You know, I think there is a bow in that. " Freaking mind blown.

Thanks Sleek. Straight wood will make a better bow but I've always been a sucker for curves. I was thrilled when Sabo gave me that.

I'd have plain thought you were just a sicker to be happy to take that stave! Obviously I'm the fool. You did that perfectly.

Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer.

Good job.

Great job on an unwilling participant.  For some reason character pieces don't turn my crank.   Kind of like Rat Rods.
