Got lucky on one

  I was glueing up an RD yesterday. I normally weight the backing and the belly and grind it down till I am within about 3 or 4 oz of projected mass and then I glue it up. That usually puts me right at floor tiller coming out of the form. This time I went a bit too far and ground it down to within 1 oz of projected mass. I glued it up with tightbond and let it sit in the hot sun for about 3 hours, unwrapped it and gave it 2 more hours. I cleaned it up on the belt sander and put it on the long string. Just by sheer luck no tillering at all and the bow came in at 49.8# after exercising. It lost a total of 2# and took 1/2" total set. I am having a little trouble handling my bows at 50# right now so I had to test it at 26" with a 500 grain arrow. I got 175 and 176 fps. I figure that should put it right at 190 or so when shot for flight. Top limb is a little strong but the bow is asymmetrical by 2 1/2" so it seems to handle the negative tiller pretty well and shoot cleanly. Best one I have had in some time and I blame it mostly on luck

Dang Steve. And I get happy when I can just get an even tiller at first brace, you are getting even tillers at full draw, and at target draw weight. That is absolutely insane. I wish I could learn from you directly.

  Mostly just blind luck, I pretillered the pieces on the belt sander before glue up. Not room for adjustments though when I cut it this close.

I think I had one bow at floor tiller right out of the gate kind of sweet when that happens.
"I am having a little trouble handling my bows at 50#" …….I hear ya I'm 63 and pulling anything over 38 is getting to be a strain on the old arms.

Got bit of a Yumi thing going on there. It scares me when I cut it close. I've never been that close but the last few have taken very little tillering after bracing. Sooner or later I'll go to far.

  This one here my main goal was as little set as possible for efficiency. I kept the handle and fade area short 8" as opposed to my usual 12" to 13". I also made it longer at 68" nock to nock, top limb is 2 1/4 " longer ( slight mistake here should have been 1 1/2" but I decided not to cut it down) It stores right at 50# energy which was also my goal.
