what is it?
« on: April 16, 2019, 02:34:25 pm »
My girlfriend found this in a creek far from any human traffic. It has been shaped and appears to have a petroglyph of an animal of sorts with antlers on the back with a possible hunter standing behind the animal.

I collected artifacts for years and have never seen anything like it in any of my travels or reference material.

Any guesses?

Looks like a guy standing too close to a moose fart and got knocked back...

The pic on the right looks faded enough to be a person throwing a atlatl or spear. Mabey redraw it following the faded lines. How about you knap it and see what it could be! )P(

I think the petroglyphs rule out any kind of working stone.  Perhaps a commenter active to celebrate a first kill!  Neat find in any case!

Interesting Eric. Does that edge go all the way around? It almost seems like it could be a lid or cover for some type of container.
Cool at any rate.

Just kidding about the knapping i think it might  be a combination of BJs idea and Hawks. Pots were decorated and had important pictures on them. or its a unicorn.

I know i tend to be cynical but it is not possible it is some sort of floor tile with some cement on the bottom?
If you examine the material it looks like natural stone?

The rim goes all the way around and it does look like a pot lid of some kind.

I realize looking at the markings on this object is like picking recognizable objects out of clouds, it could be anything but some of these markings look to be on purpose.

Eric if it didn't have that obvious edge worked Itd be like looking at a ink splotch. From what I can see of pictures bottom almost looks like it may have been ground flatter? It was definitely something special

I still say that it looks like a guy getting colon punched by a moose fired air biscuit.

Does it have that lip all the way around? Shaft straightener? Lid of some kind?

Perhaps the S looking thing in front of the moose, perhaps that's the mark or signature of the maker. Or a symbol of some sorts. Perhaps look through know tribes languages on the area and see if it represents a god of some type or a recognizable symbol? The hunter in the back could be throwing an atlatl.

The petroglyph can be pretty crude, here is a museum piece on a similar rock.
