You just over ran my abilities with the program.  I use it to reduce the file size for posting, and some editing and cropping, thats about it.  It will do a lot more than I will ever use!

The colors for drawing in Gimp are called foreground colors.  Click on the black rectangle at the bottom of the toolbox and it will let you select a new color.  Default is black and white, and you can go back to that by clicking the smaller black and white rectangles right below the big one.
