This is a knife I once forged. Decided it needed a nicer sheath.

@DC: it is an extra layer of leather. It's named Keder in German, no idea what the English word is. Maybe welt but not sure. I'll take a picture for you later.

What kind of rawhide did you use? The deer hides I have just seem way to thin for me and I doubt they could server as a welt. Being so thin the knife bade is likely to slide right in to the stitching.

I have made two sheaths so far and used 8oz leather for them. I wanted to use the deer hides I have, but have thought about saving a ground hog hide to try.

@archerybob: The rawhide I used is European redstag, and it is quite thick. The rawhide is always lined with buckskin (or any other thin lather). Thick leather is used for the welt.  I used waterproof woodglue for lining and welt.

Well, I'm planing to do anotherone sometime soon, maybe I'll do a little build-along.

I have failed in my attempts to make a rawhide knife sheath. I would welcome a build along if you make another. What you made is what I had envisioned when I attempted mine but mine came out poorly. I was using deer rawhide.

Yes, welt is the correct word and you are using it perfectly. 

That is a beautiful knife, sir.  The design is very useful and practical, the scales have the same rugged and simple design as the blade! Everything looks balanced to the eye, and I am willing to bet it is balanced to the hand just the same.  Good work making a sheath worthy of such a blade.  I wouldn't be afraid to depend on that knife in a tough situation!

Very nice work on both. I have thought about using rawhide but wondered how it would hold up if it gets wet ?
