Woohoo!!!!
« on: March 16, 2019, 03:29:33 pm »
I've been going nuts waiting for seasoned yew. Finally, I've recovered 6 half-logs. Had to wait for dry conditions to make it up the mountain to my seasoning station. This is everything I've got that was cut/split a year or more ago. I guess there ought to be up to a dozen staves in there.

The ones one the right with the white streaks, that's a single branch. The white is rot, it was rotting from the inside which is a well documented thing in yew.

The rest is from a single log. Far left are the two inner heartwood halves. When I split it right after cutting, the whole thing separated along a ring rather cleanly.

That would concern me. It may be nothing but I would double check the rest of the log to see that it's solid.

Agreed, and it appears to be sound. I'll get some pics to show what I can see close up

Here's what's still left to cut. If I stopped now, I've got 14 staves, it looks like I'll get at least 7 more

Instead of saying Woo Hoo you should have Yew Hew.

Yew Hew. That's funny. That would be a good name for a bow.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer
