This article link was posted by Syth

in the velum/parchment thread here
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,65081.15.html
and I do not wish to high-jack the thread any more than I already have done.
My question is this - am I correct in reading the measurements table that the balance point and greatest thickness of the Turkish flight arrows measured are, on average, behind the mid-point of the arrow - it seems to come out at approximately 13.5 inches from the point on a 24.5" arrow . I had always thought that this rearward weight bias caused instability in flight and a balance point forward of mid-point was preferable?

Common sense would say that the balance point should be forward but apparently the dynamics of flight change that. Something along the lines that the drag of the fletching compensates for the balance point being a bit far back. Wait for someone with smarts to give a better answer.

As I recall, the balance point for targets and the balance point for distance are different. I believe that's what kiriz endam is for. There was a discussion on ATARN about it.
