another blacksmith knife

hot out of the forge.
forged from a Nicholson file.
clay oated and quenched in warm canola oil.
hot vinagar etched to show hamon
6.0 overall 2 3/4 blade.
legal everyday carry here in Michigan and thats my plan as soon as i get it in leather.

mecos from menards.

most any refractory cement will work.
imperial has been my favorite.

Can you clear something up for me? The hamon shows the difference in hardness, right? Will it tend to lose it's edge quicker where the hamon reaches the edge in those few spots?

correct.
i thought the same thing when i started but havent noticed a significant difference in hardness  till you get a ways above the line.
its still reasonably hard till you get about 1/3 the way up the blade.

you can feel  it when its sanded,

the clay stopped 1/8 to 3/16 above where the actual line is.

The edge seems to be holding up well.
If I ever get to the point I'm not happy with it I will reheat treat and temper.

I haven’t done anything with hamons so I wasn’t sure if the hardened steel stops right at the line or if it was a bit past it.

Really like that blade Kevin. That'll be a very handy knife to use and carry. I'd like to see what you come up with for leather to carry it.
