My first thought was persimmon after seeing the bark but the leaves don't look like the persimmons around here.
DC is right, there are male and female persimmon trees. DC, I've seen young persimmon trees bear fruit. They may have been 10 years old but I don't know for sure.

The bark on this tree is really soft...feels like cork.
All the persimmon trees I've seen have black bark once they've gotten to this size also, I've seen them fruit within 5 years. The leaves are different than persimmon, too.

I just split the log. The wood's pretty lightweight, very white colored, and seems pretty soft. The bark wasn't easy to just pull off by hand (kinda brittle), so I shaved it off with a drawknife. There were no fruits or seeds on the tree at all.

Persimmon trees can be either sex and can change sex yearly so a lack of fruit production can be misleading. If this wood is tight grained and fairly hard I would think its a type of persimmon.

Persimmon is a simple leaf, so this can't be persimmon. The leaves looks ash-ish, but I don't know much about East coast trees.

I am pretty sure it is ash, I pulled up a picture of a black ash leave and it is a match. All the ash where I hunt has similar bark.

I first thought it might be Hackberry but with no fruits or seeds on the tree at all I'm doubting my thoughts.

Is that a compound leaf with leaflets or are they individual leaves?
