gelatin glue fungicide

Hi guys,
I was gluing up with gelatin glue I made last weekend and found it was starting to go moldy.  Anyone put fungicide/preservatives into their gelatin glues?

did you keep it in a wet state or let it dry out??

I let it dry out, probably should have put it in the freezer.

Adding a fungicide is not uncommon in the use of hide glue.  Perhaps less so in the archery world however.

Sorry Badger, the more I think about it the more I'm confused, I used a gelatin powder , 1 part powder, 3 parts water, I left it set like jello in a small Tupperware pot with a lid on.

What you made is called a Petri dish . it's what people use to cultivate bacteria and mold strains. The glue has to be used, dried hard or frozen or it will grow stuff.

So put it in a tub but don't put a lid on it?

Put a lid on it and put it in the freezer.  Or pour it out in a thin layer on a pan.  Once it cools and turns to jello, cut it into small pieces and let it it dry completely.

In the past garlic was used  in conjunction with hide glue and there was likely fungicidal benefits from that.  You can add a couple of drops of clove oil or similar to inhibit growth.

I’m not sure but I don’t believe you want that much water for glue. I’m curious as I have a box of glue I’m planning on using. Ed
