Another q about osage...
« on: November 21, 2018, 01:35:14 pm »
Seems like I've been asking a lot lately...
Have any of you made the back of the bow with the inner heart wood? That wording doesn't sound right, but I don't know how else to say it.
Instead of the outer heart being the back and inner being the belly, go the opposite. Maybe that sounds better. Anyway, does it make any difference?

You could but you would have a concave back on your bow.

Would that cause any negative effects?

Not sure, I think it would put more strain on the other edges of the bow.

I have done it before a couple times. You really need a flat ring pattern.

I believe Pappy and Gary Davis each made a bow that way.  It takes a stave from a large diameter tree to get a somewhat flat back.  I plan on trying this on a deflexed stave.  If I flip it over and chase a belly ring for the back it becomes a reflexed stave.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

I have done it a couple times with no problems. I agree with Steve on maybe putting more tension on the outer edges of the limbs. How ever if the stave is from a big tree they seam to work and have excellent cast.
