I got a hatchet head with an adze from eBay. It was pretty cheap, but I figure I can try it and if I like using a hatchet and an adze enough I may get a better one someday, maybe even make it myself. I was disappointed to find out it was made out of 1045 steel, so I rehardened it with a water quench to get as much carbon matrixed on the edge as I can. I just may have to resharpen frequently, we'll see. I can't really complain for the price I paid. Despite the material I have no complaints with the forging, it is sturdy, lightweight, aligned well and has a great shape. I used some scrap red oak for the handle that I shaped and fitted with my ax, knife, and rasp. I finished it with 120 grit sandpaper, stain, and tung oil. It feels good to make my own tool. I can't wait to put her to work, she should be ready for a beating.
