"Elderberized Rowan"
« on: August 14, 2018, 08:03:45 am »
Hi Folks

May I present you another little bow?

Rowan
61,5" ntn
385 g
feels like 45# @ 28"
finished with 4 coats of pure elderberry juice - oil - shellac

Thanks to all of you guys for posting all these inspiring bows and thanks also for all the good advice - i'm learning a lot with you. E.g. bought a cool steaming device and did a nice caul for hooks (-; one broke and was patched with a piece of yew...

Cheers

Like that you used the berries to color with ,your bows are turning out nicely.
what was the diameter of the wood when cut?

Looks good. Do you have any idea whether the color will fade?

Very nice! The tiller looks great.  I bet it throws an arrow with that profile.

That are great looking profiles on that stick (my hats off!), the elderberry stain is a bit heavy colored - but I'm sure the sun will do a good job. But nice idea to do with a natural material.

Hi Folks

Thanx for those berry nice compliments - they mean a lot to me!

It was last year, when I read somewhere, that the color of elderberry should be rather lightfast. At the same time my wife cooked this delicious elderberry jelly - On the quiet I sneaked to the kitchen, grabbed a pint and deep freezed it...until now  :BB We will see how it develops...

omh2, my rowan staves usually have 3 - 5" in diameter - I think they are difficult to split and therefore use the bandsaw. Divide them in two if they are 4 or more or then rough out the smaller ones. good sealing is also required for not cracking.

DC: I've no idea, just read something. Surplus my wife said that she had no chance to wash out clothes with elderberry stain  8)

Simson: I actually aimed for a darker color, almost black, especially the back, not so girlysh  ;D [off course, wood structure would probably be better visible with a lighter colouring]

Hans: I will try to cut some the upcoming winter - still straight and long is hard to find.

Cheers

Very nice!  I personally love the color and hope it doesn't fade much on you over time!!

And, of course, the shape of the bow is great as well.

Sweet job with the tiller on that one.  :OK

I stained a bow with beet juice once and the color was similar. Yours is better though.  ;)
