Hi everyone,

Just wanted to get a second opinion on the tiller of my black locust selfbow. It looks pretty good to me, but it is kinda hard to tell with the top limb. There is a weird twist on the top limb that would have been too difficult to take out with the tools I have. It is pulling about 55# right now with a slack tillering string. How does it look to you guys?

Black locust is unforgiving and will fret in a heartbeat. In general your tiller looks fair but I see a lot of spots that could use a little more bend. Your bow will still read 55# when you brace it so depending on your target weight you are getting pretty close. I don't know if you could use a gizmo or not because I don't know how flat your limbs are.
Maybe someone will come along with a paint program and mark the spots that need work. I don't know how to do that. I don't think I would brace it until you did a little touch up.

I would get the outer limbs coming around more,that's just my thoughts though.

I second what bush boy is saying... Are you going for a Mollegabet? If not there is a hinge going on in lower limbs. Particular in the right limb, the left doesn't look to bad.

Also it is hard to tell from the pic, are you getting twist going on?

To me, it looks like it is ready for the short string provided you have pulled the tillering string to 10" and you want around a 50# bow.

Here is the way I determine if the stave is ready for the short string.

I long string tiller out to 10" looking for good limb movement and target bow weight + 5#.

This puts the bow weight at 10# over final target weight.

I then string it.

I'm not really going for any particular style of bow, just one that shoots and doesn't bend at the handle. There is a bit of twist in the top limb. I have a few pictures of it. I figured I would just work with it.

Here are pictures of the bow relaxed and pulled back after working on the outer limbs a bit. Still about 50# at 28" with the long tiller string

It will be 50#@28 or less when you brace it. Most likely less because it will take a little more set.

I wouldn't do any more work on the outer limbs. Brace the bow

Alright I finally got the bow braced up and so far so good. I am pulling back to my draw length and its feels good. Bottom limb feels a little stronger than the top but that's what you would want right? I shoot three under if that plays into it. Should I do some test shots out the bow now?
