I used caramelized bamboo (the dark stuff) once. Worked great.

I understood what you said ,but I have always heard it said belly over lays or back over lays , at least in books Etc, but got the point.

No.  Pretty sure it's going over something.  It is under the string but that's only when the bow is braced.  By that criteria you would have to class tip overlays as tip underlays  :D

I always called it an overlay, in this case maybe call it a beauty mark, they are usually covering bending cracks
