Does polyurethane work on ipe if you degrease it first?

Hello. I was reading that a lot of people seal ipe first with shellac then use other finishes. Does anyone have any experience using polyurethane after wiping the bow down with mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol?

I don't want to buy a can of shellac just to use for a few coats.

I’d go with boiled linseed oil or tung oil then johnson’s wax. Polish it with a piece of paper bag to finish and she’ll shine right up. Then you don’t need to worry about adhesion and the finish is easily refreshed or repaired down the road.

I suggest Helmsman clear satin in a rattle can, you will have no problems and will never have to touch it again.

Don't degrease it, that only draws more oil to the surface.

No need to degrease before finishing, just sand and put your finish on. I tried dozens of different finishes. Poly, waterbased, acrylic, etc... they all work fine on ipe
