Playing with Hickory

I had a mis-cut hickory blank and decided to play with it, I like to experiment. When I bent the statics one cracked a good bit so I added osage overlays to reinforce the curves. I used smooth-on for my first static reinforcements but they popped loose, I used Unibond the next time and they stayed put.  I finished tillering it yesterday and was surprised how zippy it was for hickory, the limbs are heat treated

I had cut the blank out for my ham fisted nephew, I made the handle 4 1/2" which was much too long for what I had in mind. This bow has a long transition into the fades to make the 4" handle work.

Looks great! I really dig the color transition of the nock overlays - they almost seem to fade into the Osage backing. Cowardly me would probably have added a linen wrap over the free end of the partial backing...  :D

Nice save Eric. Hard to beat good old urea formaldehyde glues.

A .54 Issac Haines, I may have to trash the precarve stock as it too out of whack to mate the barrel and lock.

I stained the bow today with medium brown leather dye, lots of coats then rubbed it back to a sunburst, light at the handle fading dark to the tips. I am going to put an epoxy acetone finish on the bow to hopefully stop the hickory from absorbing moisture so quickly.
