322 yards with 41" osage
« on: May 05, 2018, 03:52:22 pm »
Just shot my personal best of 295 meters/322 yards. The record arrow is still not best, but quite good.
Bow: 41" sinew backed osage 84# @20,5", with deflex handle
Arrow: 23" pine 188gr, balance point just a little forward, aluminium pile, 40x8mm turkey fletching
Funny thing was, i shot multiple 260-273m shots with stiffer,  badly flying 350 grain arrows.

That barn almost jumped on the way, but luckily arrow flew over it. :D

Good shot! Each time you break a barrier it gets easier and easier.

Nice shot!  Congratulations!  Looks like you just missed some killer rocks, too.  Btw, you do have to watch out for jumping barns - they ca ruin an otherwise great shot (SH) >:D!

Thank you!
I hope i will make even more success now that i have better idea what flies well.
The arrow was product of bigger patch(40 pcs)  of flight arrows. It sure was useful to test plenty of arrows.
And to be honest that 188gr ubderspined arrow wasn't at all what i was expecting to fly the farthest.
I broke about 12 arrows on those rocks, but it was worth it since i got good shots eventually. :D
Btw the bow was that 1930s style osage recurve that i just presented here a while back, now i just drew it a bit further.

Great shot! Glad you missed the barn;-) Pretty impressive draw weight on that shorty too. I need to train some more to handle that :BB

Thanks!
Just a little training and you are there! Its a funny bow design. Not really typical.  :D

On the weekend we will have a flight shooting competition, where I will shoot the bow again.
I'm thinking a bit longer draw and more arrows. I dared to shoot the good arrow only two times, 283, 295m. Decided to save it for the competition, so lets see what it can do...

I remember getting started with this Flight archery, and it seemed to take forever to reach 300 yards with all natural materials gear.  Do you have enough time before the competition to make some arrows that fall between the heavy and stiff arrows, and the light farthest flying arrow?  It is a challenge to find that perfect balance of tuning and speed with these short draw lengths.

Well actually i'm not there yet... The string is bcy 452x. I could make a linen string but it would be crazy thick. I think i will shoot with the bcy for now and shoot with linen in 50# class. In autumn i will definitely try linen strings on heavier bows.
But you are right, it takes some time. I have awful lot of flight arrows that just didn't work.

I do have a day free on thursday, so i'll do couple flight arrows more.

Thank you for the wishes!

Just made a new record! 342 yards/313 meters. 229 grains 22" arrow that i drew 21".
Bad thing was that when i went to 22" draw the bow exploded. We got it on video though, it was funny. I was shirtless, so i got nice red mark from the string.
Sinew lifted from the nock and delaminated, making the limb explode.
I was a record holder in Finland for some 30 minutes, after which my friend shot TWO meters farther... hah.

Excellent!! I expect you will be besting your own records for some time to come. Now set your sights on 400

Thanks guys! It feels like flight is all the time getting easier...!  I wish we had possibility to shoot flight all year around, but its quite not possible with ice and snow.
I noticed you get quite a lot extra distance the heavier the bow is. I think i'll make another same style bow with heavier poundage and better sinew job/wrappings.
It would be quite fun to shoot these under 50" sinewed osage shorties up to 110 pounds or such.
400y would be something...

That is a very nice shot, and a nasty string burn!  Congratulations, at least, the person who broke tour record was a friend (SH)!
