Aim small miss small
« on: May 19, 2018, 09:00:08 am »
Finished my build and my powder horn which I’ll post soon but after a bit of range time tweaking things yesterday I decided to go have some fun. 4 shots and 3 of these hoof breakers aren’t digging anymore! Longest shot was a solid 50 yards. Other 2 were both at about 20. I need to play with patch thickness as my accuracy at 50 seems very very horrible.

50 cal tc Hawken, 55 grains of RS pyrodex, .490 Hornady ball, .015 pre lubed patch.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short. Amen.

You might try messing with the powder charge.  I had a Uberti .54 Hawken replica with a 1-48 twist and it liked 90 grs of 3F.  Accuracy was so-so and a friend of mine suggested going up rather than down.  Said the ball would obturate better with more thump.  That rifle would shoot into one ragged hole at 50 yds and 2"-3" at 100.  I patched with lubed denim and a .530 ball.

My .45 had a 1-70" twist and it liked 70 grs of 3F, with about the same accuracy as the Hawken.  I won a few matches with that rifle.

I tried between 50-70 grains. Just using 55 to stretch my powder to more shots on squirrels.

But didja get full penetration with only 55 grains on that bull ground sqwerl?  Or didja just stun him, take the pic quick and then run off before he came back to his senses and mauled you to death? Well, pilgrim?

A 177 grain ball is going to penetrate just fine. I kill deer with full penetration with a .490 ball and 65 grains of 2f out of a Hawken just like that one.
