Tree ID?

My tree ID skills are lacking, I know its pathetic. Pretty sure its some type of Hickory.

I'd say its a hickory of sorts based of the fleshy color. But, I cant say that furshur. You can get a "Trees of "fill in the blank"" colored pocket book for $12. Well worth it.

Core isn't real dark but the bark isn't diamond shape either, so I'm learning towards hickory.

Doesn't have hickory typically grow a lot slower than that? It looks similar to ash, but.....

Thanks Guys. It sorta grew with a twist and was awful knotty toward one end. I figure at least 8 nice risers in it for tilams, several knife and or hatchet handles in it.

Pat no smell that I can tell. Of course I've smoked captain black for a lot of years the ole sniffer don't work to good. Ill go dig up a root and give it a chew.

This is for sure sassafras. The twig structure/ colour, flowers, bark and wood colour all point to the root beer wood. Wow they are flowering early! Still cold and snowing here in southern Ontario.   (S)

If one end is twisted and knotted maybe instead of trying to get a full-length bow out of it you can get billets for a splice or takedown from the good end?

Sassafras grows like a weed hence the wider growth rings, ash rings would be much tighter.

All the sassafras I've cut had an obvious sapwood ring.
