I'm a little uncertain if you are only seeing the separation between the sinew and wood or separation within the actual wood.

How I wish thst were the case. Can't get my phone to show a clear enough macro pic. I can stick a straight pin in about an 8th inch.

Yes and they have never been a problem but conifer wood is not the same as ring porous. run sinew down the sides to cover it and maybe wrap it too. That might help you
