Looks good Morgan.  I often end up with that same taper at the tips and i know exactly what you mean.

I have my backup plan almost done.  Here she is at first brace. Red oak backed Osage. Never seen that one before but i like red oak backs. I get these really awesome quartersawn 3/16th 2 1/2” wide eight foot cabinet fillers at Fleet Farm. It’s drawing in the 65# range i would guess. I haven’t pulled it past 25” and that’s right at 55# and I’m shooting for 55# at 28”. No set so far. The Osage is an old timber found in a barn.

I’ll get some more photos.

72” ntn 73” overall. 61.5# @ 28.5”. Red oak backed Osage. Might drop the 5 or 6#. It want to shoot it more first. 100 shots so far.  Unbraced pic is immediately after unstringing.

looks like that right limb is stiffer by a good bit than the left.  might need a few scrapes more on that side.  but stay away from that fade.  it looks like it is doing most of the bending.

Yep i see it. Middle 8” of the right/top limb and the tip needs just a fuzz.  You can see in person that the belly lam is probably 1/32 thicker there as well. Thank you.

Hello All,

Found a little time to put a little work in.  It may not be looking too much like a bow yet, but I got the entire stave reduced to about 1 3/4" wide.  Final thickness should be closer to around 1 1/2" for this attempt at an eastern woodlands style bow.  This stave is thick enough, that I want to try and get another bow off the belly, which is why I reduced the entire stave to a constant thickness.  Now I will pay a visit to my friend to use his bandsaw to reduce the belly so that I can hopefully get at least a kids bow out of the belly.  Then it won't take much to get this to the tillering stage, hopefully this weekend.  I really like this stave.  It's got some nice curves in it to keep it interesting.

I did spend a little time this weekend building up my stave stock as well.  Cut some mullberry off a friend's property and got 4 nice, strait staves and a few billets split and up in my shed seasoning.  Can't wait to put these to work next year.

Did a little more work today. Got it to low brace and bending. At the point I need to heat the belly, kinda nervous about it, one limb is getting ridiculously thin the last foot or so as is. Heating always makes it stiffer and that will increase the problem. May put some reflex into it.

Doing some nice work there guys!

Sorry I got way busy for the last week or 2. But I been plugging away at this osage stave every chance I get. Got the limbs bending some in the last 2 days. Its about 1 7/8 at the fades and narrows up to 1 3/4 before it tapers. With all the curves in it those are approximate numbers. Think I'm going try and even up the reflex this weekend so I can get to tillering next week. Tips and handle are oversized yet, string alignment should not be a problematic as that elm I was working on was.

I think with what I got to work with, I'm going to go with 3 inch fades. I always like the way the grain appears there and that should show it off real nice. Got some more good ideas for this one but need to get it bending well first.

 Morgan, I think the light and the slight limb twist in the picture is throwing me off on the thickness...Let that wood tell you where to scrape...Looks very even, nice start...
