New (to me) toy
« on: February 28, 2018, 04:43:34 pm »
This dude is gonna make reducing split staves sooooo much easier. This saw sat in the warehouse where I work for about 6 years collecting dust. A woodturning friend sweet talked our boss out of it and it sat in his garage for another 6 without moving. He said he didn’t have time to fool with it and gave it to me with the agreement that if he had to rough out any logs to bowl blanks he could anytime. Some elbow grease, half a can of kroil, and a cheap 3tpi blade later and she’s cutting. I won’t say what I used for band tires. Rip cuts through hackberry like it isn’t even there. There is a piece that I need to get for it. Don’t know what it’s called, but it is a round piece that sits in the table where the blade passes through.

I have a Delta.  I replaced that piece you are missing with an aftermarket made out of nylon, it came as a pack of 3.

That's a nice saw.  I've got to ask though.  What did you use as tires?
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

I still have the package in the shop so I'll have a look tomorrow.  I don't remember what happened to the original steel insert, whether it broke or I got tired of it wearing out blades

Nice!! Are there any disadvantages to using a bandsaw versus an draw knife or hand axe? I would assume it would be a little easier?
Thanks, Ryan

Bandsaw, table sander, and a mini lathe. All I want for Christmas! Hahaha congrats on the new toy! Should make life a bit more fun.

Tape. One roll of electric tape each wheel and half a roll of friction tape each. Nowhere local had tires, and I wanted to get it working today, so i did some reading and read that it would work in a pinch. maybe It’ll do till I get some urethane tires in.

The original would have been aluminum. I used my lathe to make a replacement out of holly.  Had to make it   much thicker except for the rim. It's been fine.

I made one for the late David Mims out of aluminum with a hacksaw and a file, pretty easy to do.
