Yew short recurve with sinew and haddock skin backing
« on: January 21, 2018, 07:42:19 pm »
This is little bow was made from a nearly discarded remainder piece of yew from a stave I received from High-dessert.  The stave he sent was great for one bow only I originally thought but after I started laying out I was sure that I might be able to get 2 good target bows rather than just one heavy hitter and since I had never recurved yew before this I figured I would give it a go.  Anyway the result is this little bend through the handle 34 pound at 27 inch 59 inch sweetheart.  I put a single heavy layer of sinew on for safe keeping and I am glad I did because otherwise it would have been to light in my mind.  This is the first time I have ever used Haddock skins and I like them, the belly goes almost completely transparent and its pretty cool.  The tips are of white oak burl and I wrapped the ends of the backings with black silk thread, the arrow rest is buffalo horn antler and finally the handle is jute twine.  I have included a picture of the young recipient of this bow on christmas morning because I love seeing my bows in the users hands as much as all of you do.

Looked at this one last night before you had the pictures up. That is a nice little yew bow and that had to feel fantastic to see that last full draw picture. Wow wait till he gets to actually shoot a arrow with it.

An absolute beauty. Every bow you've ever posted has such a perfect tiller, goes to show how good you are at this. The recipient will get many years of enjoyment. Very nice work  ;)

Thanks for kind words everyone, I am really falling in love with yew as a bow wood! I just wish it was native to my parts.

That kid takes a great action pose!  Hope he catches the bug himself.

Thanks Upstate!  That's high praise considering the amazing bows you have been churning out lately.  I need to do a rigid recurve like yours soon.
