Rawhide-Backed Vine Maple
« on: January 21, 2018, 12:52:14 am »
I finished this bow a while ago, and am finally getting around to posting it. I intended to make it a selfbow, but I wasn't careful enough while removing the bark and scratched the back, so I backed it with rawhide. I only had short pieces, so I used one per limb, and left the handle section un-backed, which actually turned out looking kinda cool. The stain is a dark brown leather dye, and the tip overlays are buffalo horn. She is 65" long and draws 53# at 28". The claw-shaped upper limb tip makes stringing exciting.
I'm fairly happy with the tiller, but not sure it's perfect. Comments welcome.

Jackpine,
Yes, all one piece. I did a black stain on the tips and handle, fading into a brown stain in the limbs. The rawhide backing takes up the stain differently from the wood, creating some nice contrasts. Tried to use the ombré effect to visually break up the line of the bow in the woods, and it actually works really well.

Sweet looking bow, nicely finished.

Was your stave decrowned? Perhaps you found a larger than usual tree?

Nice! Where was the wood from?

Willie, vine, the stave is one I harvested from one of the many vine maple treasure troves we have here in Western Washington. It was about 2 1/2" diameter, maybe a little more. I left the high crown as is. Thanks for the kind words, all!
