Just finished up an osage self bow. It's 53#@28" and 62" long.  I tried to keep this one simple. The stave was not a perfect stave. It had a narrow spot that restricted my width and it was pretty thin too. It was one of those bows that I shrugged and said, well, lets see what kind of bow this stave will let me make. Of course, it doesn't take much osage to make a bow so of course it had plenty more to offer than I had initially suspected. I really like the way the steel wool/vinegar stain looks on osage. It gives it an aged look. I went with sheep horn on the tips to contrast with the dark stain. The handle wrap is elk leather and it has a beaver tail strike plate. All in all, a nice, simple, good shooting bow.

DC, glad you noticed the pattern underneath. It turned out more subtle than I had intended. I'm going to keep playing around with the idea to get it just right.

JWMALONE, yes that's my maker's mark for Swiftwood Bows. :)

Thanks, upstatenybowyer. I didn't have much of a choice with this stave. It was either make this bow or make firewood.  ;D

Nice bow Weylin. I've been playing around with some Osage for the first time this winter. It is amazing how little wood you actually need to make a bow. I'm sure that piece of wood is much happier being that bow than a piece of firewood.

Hi Weylan, I love how you worked with this stave. In particular I like the I-Beam features you have added on the sides of the tips. It looks like you have carried it gently through to the handle. It is an idea I have been intending to pursue for a while as well. I believe it should allow you to make the back and belly work equally by playing with the width of each side of the beam. Gorgeous finish on this bow as well! You are not just a bowyer but truly an artist! Your work is inspiring!!

Phillip, can you elaborate on the I-beam thing? I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about and I wonder if you might be seeing something that's not there. Some of the pictures create a bit of an illusion of contour that's not actually there.
