How many layers would you need for a cloth backing? I’m using an old shirt. I’m asking this cause my dogbone rawhide is full of holes and is better reserved for glue stock.

If your shirt is denim I would say one, if its light weight poly-nylon or satin you could use two. I've used two layers of linen on badly violated backs, but there is also the downside of unnecessary added weight by doing so.

One layer is plenty for a cloth backing. If the cloth is well saturated with glue it makes a matrix. Cloth backings won't keep a bad stave from breaking but it will help hold down possible splinters. Another cheap options would be a silk neck tie from your local thrift shop or used cloths shop. Silk scarfs are also good. You can get nice designs on these items and usually for only a few bucks.

Like Pat said, 1 layer is sufficient. One will just add weight. Jute
=burlap. More on my site. Silk, linen and burlap are good and natural materials. For some reason that mattered to me. Gotta go.

D$%n Pat, you're using words that send me to a dictionary to understand. I was thinking Keanu Reeves movies.

My shirt’s made of cotton. I’m not sure what “bad” stave means. I mean, I did a little decrowning but I didn’t cut through the whole growth ring. I’m less concerned about performance than this thing blowing and smacking me in the head. I have other options just to let ya guys know.
