Brad, I'd say give it a try. I've only made a few elm bows but I was quite impressed with it as a bow wood. My best is a 60" red elm static recurve.(55#@26"). Elm reacts very well to belly tempering.
Sorry, but I can't identify the elm in your pic.

Tim Baker says all species of Elm will make a bow. Only worked with Slippery Elm myself. It worked out well.  :BB

that looks an awful lot like siberian elm.  It will make a bow.  I have seen several do it, and after several attempts, I think I have one successfully tillered out too.  I would recommend giving it a little extra width and a little extra length compared to the more prime bow woods.  the sapwood seems to work better than the heartwood, but it may just be the staves I had to work with.

stickbender,, It just keeps looking a me,, so I thought I might give it a try,, I am pretty slow so if I cut the tree who knows when I might get to it,,its right out my back door so very tempting,, I thought I would try to clamp it a bit straighter when green and see what it does,,,

This one turned out to be siberian elm. I have used it several times and really like it.
