Nock size

What size file do you use to make your string nocks and why? I use 8 strands of FF so I could use a 1/8" file but I notice sometimes you guys use a nock that is way bigger than the string.

I use the tapered end of a 10" rat tail file, its a little too big so I have to be careful. I've also done what Jawge uses, cut the initial groove with a small blade, then enlarge with a chain saw file. The problem with that is the teeth aren't deep enough to take off much wood.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about the string nock on the bow tips, not the arrows.

I use a 1/8" chainsaw file.

I use the 1/8 chain saw file then wrap it with sand paper and enlarge & smooth it a bit

Don i just use a rod saw for cutting time and whatnot, foes on a hacksaw frame. Then shape it with needle files and sandpaper. Cheers- Brendan

I'm OK then, I use a tile saw and a 5/32" chainsaw file. I just thought I'd seen some way larger ones. Maybe they use a stringer.

I have a coping saw with a tile cutting blade. It's a braided/twisted steel cable with abrasives bonded to the cable.  Works like a charm.  HOWEVER, it is aggressive and you want to use light strokes and go easy.

I also use it to cut nocks in the arrows because it leaves a round bottom to the nock, matching the round nature of the bowstring.

I use a 6" rat tail file 1/8" in diameter,  Cuts much faster than a chainsaw file
