tiller advice please
« on: October 06, 2017, 07:21:34 am »
Hi Guys, this elb is now at low brace, one limb (the right one in the photo) is slightly reflexed, the other is slightly weaker and a little bit r/d, the tip actually lines up with the handle though it looks like it doesn't.  Need some advice about tiller please. If it makes any difference, I have not done any heat correction or tempered it (yet).

I would heat straighten the deflex limb to match the reflex and tiller as normal. Should only take you 15 or 20 minutes with a heatgun. Make sure your outers start bendin because now it looks like it only bends in the middle.

Leave the middle 1/3 of the bow alone. The right limb could bend a little more mid limb. I would also save the tempering for later in the process.

That looks pretty thick to be bending much. Is it camera angle. Did you floor tiller?

You need a plan to determine when the stave is ready for stringing.

I long string tiller out to 10" looking for bow weight or a little more and good limb movement. Then I string it.

I tillered out to 14" on a long string then I decided it was too long and cut it down from 76" ttt to 72".  Currently, 'brace' is at 2".

You should invest in a scale so you can see what weight you are pulling, you can get a cheap digital fishing scale that goes up to 50kg  (110#) for a fiver off Ebay. Or there's a dial one for £8
I helps 'cos you can pull to a full target weight and see how it's bending.

Cheers Del, I already got 2 scales, a 50# and a 75# scale,  :D draw weight is currently 30# at 16".  I don't have a target weight in mind, was really just seeing what I could get from the stave, I just want it to be over 40 @ 28, BUT my draw is 24" and I haven't yet tillered a bow past 26"

Mid to outer limbs need to come round quite a bit more. Don't increase the brace height untiul they are. Elliptical tiller will be your friend on this one. Too much inner/mid limb bend will lead to handshock.

OK, so I've done some work, the bow has been taken to 16" on a long string hanging 1" and is starting to show a small amount of strain (1/4" of set). The outer third of the left limb contains 6 knots and is naturally r/d . I think the centre of the right limb needs to come around a little bit , and the outer 1/3" of both limbs need to come around as well, but my eyes are starting to hurt.

currently the tapers, running left to right on 100mm intervals taken from the centre out are:

width: 16mm (tip), 25mm, 28mm, 26mm, 26mm, 26mm, 26mm, 26mm, 26mm(centre), 28mm, 27mm, 26mm, 25mm, 24mm, 23mm, 22mm, 21mm, 16mm(tip)

thickness: 16mm (tip), 18mm, 22mm, 22mm, 21mm, 22mm, 21mm, 24mm, 25mm (centre), 28mm, 25mm, 24mm, 23mm, 21mm, 20mm, 18mm, 17mm, 16mm (tip)

I think your outers need to bend a lot more, I would not touch the handle to midlimb until you get the outers (from midlimb to the tips) bending. I am guessing the set is already in the middle of the bow?

No, I don't think so, I think its at the weak point in the outer third of the left limb, the handle has kept its reflex, the right limb is still straight apart from the reflex at the tip.
