Dulling Tru-Oil

Hello Fellas just putting the final touches on a bow put on 4 coats of Tru-oil but a little to shinny for my liking for a hunting bow I dulled it a bit with 000 steel wool & was planing for a coat of wax but was wondering if any body had any technique to dull ?

Fine abrasives are  the standard for dulling glossy finishes.   Rottenstone and oil are likely better than steel wool, even the finer stuff.

  Some also spray a light coat of satin poly but that seems to defeat the purpose of using the first finish.

  If you are going to wax you can just rub on a coat and leave it unpolished.

I use 5 or 6 coats of truoil to seal my Osage, then spray a thin coat of satin poly over that to dull. That way I have the protection of the truoil without the shine. Works good for me.

I also add a quick spray of satin poly over Tru-Oil to cut the shine. It works great, it's compatible with the Tru-Oil and gives a nice satin finish. When I say a quick spray, that's what I mean...One pass over each surface will do the job and will not drip, marring the finish.

Ok thanks Fellas I will pick up a can of satin I'm going to let the tru-oil cure for a week and spray it !

I mix a slurry of pummice stone powder and vegetable oil and rub it onto the finish of tung oil. then wipe it all off with a clean, dry rag.  it makes a beautiful satin finish.

I wet sanded using oil and 1000 grit. really came out nice

I wet sand it with 600 grit and then do like jeffp51 said.

Osage bows get 3 coats of Tru Oil and 3 coats of spar urethane. Like the way Tru Oil seals the pores and I like the way the urethane waterproofs.

My wife picked up some water based flat poly from Rocklers Im going to give that a shot will let you know how it works out !

You might be better with solvent based or oil based poly because water based may not stick to the oil based Tru-Oil. Do a test first on a scrap.

Ok thanks Pat good idea I thought the flat was nice compared to the satin I will run a test first I didnt think about that , never mind my wife finish exspert told me its a no go but maybe next time as a finish by its self !

I picked up a can of the pumice stone I will try a paste of olive oil & pumice Im assuming just polish with it and a clean rag & wipe off with another clean rag ?

I use my fingers to rub it in-makes them nice and soft afterwards
