Preserving Sinew
« on: August 17, 2017, 08:57:43 am »
Hello ,
Can anyone tell me once you have cleaned sinew , how long can you keep it for ? Do you just let it dry out naturally or is it best to preserve it in a liquid ?
Thanks .

Just air dried it'll keep for years and years.I've heard of bugs bothering it some possibly but hav'nt had that happen here.
If you wanted to be sure I guess you could put them in a zip lock plastic bag.

I just let it dry naturally and store it in ziploc baggies.  Keep an eye on it for a few days after you put it in the baggie and look for condensation inside the baggie.  I've had some stored for 10 years or more.

Make sure it's dried well. I keep mine in a plastic pretzel container with a screw on lid. Been in there for years.

I wash and dry the tendons.  After I process it into fibers I store them in a small plastic tub in the house to keep them out of the humidity.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

You also need to rat proof the container, I had mine stored in plastic bags in my shed. I went to get some a few days ago and rats or squirrels had eaten a bunch of it.

Now I know what to use those Boy Scout Popcorn canisters for (-P!  Your dog or cat will also. Like to "test chew" your sinew.

ive had problem with bugs so I do this with my sinew and turkey feathers now....put in ziplock bag and put in the freezer for a few days to kill any mites. Then I unthaw with the bags open to allow moisture to escape. Once I'm sure they are totally dry, I reseal and they are good for a long time after that
