Box Elder ?
« on: July 11, 2017, 08:09:58 pm »
Found a nice 6" through box elder that has a burl knot that looks like a donut all the way around it that is around 12". I know what I'm going to do with the burl but does box elder make good bow wood?

It's a soft maple. I'm sure if it was wide enough it could make a shooter, but not the best bow wood I've heard.

Too bad too that it's so soft.It is a very pretty wood with the red lines through it and all.I've made large camel back boxes from it though that are lightweight and useful.

The red lines in fact are a fungus infection that is commom in box elders. I wouldn't try it, it is the worst maple wood.
