Hooked on fluting
« on: May 17, 2017, 09:46:52 am »
Been really trying to work on my fluting skills as of late. They pretty much never turn out how I want but getting a little better with each one. Antler and hammer stone percussion, copper pressure.

A mean and probably not fully heated piece of Keokuk and a dry but well behaved piece of Burlington in the first one, and a rude and fossil filled piece of Avon chert that was a real turd.

well it looks like you figured it out.  What is your method for fluting?

I'm gonna guess pressure due to the size of the flute channel. Either way, they look great Dan!

Real nice, I can see you have studied the Clovis points. I am also curious as to the fluting technique.

Haha thanks guys!

I do indeed use pressure, but no jigs for this kid. Never tried one actually, I just pop them off with my Ishi stick. I can make the channel a little wider by making the nipple wider but yea Stringman is correct narrow is generally pressure of some kind. As easy as it is for my skinny little chicken wings to pop off decent flutes, makes me wonder why anyone would use a jig.
